FETISH POT 
| Encrusted with tiny bits of turquoise, this fetish pot is 1 3/16 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide. The mouth opening is 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Each of the fetish bears attached to the side of the pot and carved out of jet, are 3/8 by 3/4 of an inch. A serpentine bear 5/16 by 11/16 of an inch, resides inside the pot with a small "feeding" of corn pollen and crushed turquoise. |
| The American Indian Pueblo tribe known as Zuni, or Asiwi (AH-she-wee) as they call themselves, carve and use fetish animals for religious and magical purposes. Each creature represents a source of help with certain attributes and powers. |
| Bear fetishes are one of the most important fetish animals because of their great curative abilities. They are probably the most commonly carved fetish subjects. In addition to their healing powers, bear fetishes provide help with strength and introspection. They are also said to lighten emotional burdens. |
| All fetish animals are "fed" with a combination of corn pollen and crushed turquoise. |
